ALIGHT Leadership

Six Fundamental Resources to Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Others

What Is ALIGHT Leadership?

ALIGHT Leadership is an evidence-based framework developed by Cornelia Lucey and Jolanta Burke in their groundbreaking book "Positive Leadership in Practice: A Model for Our Future" (2022). The model emerged from a comprehensive two-year research project reviewing 20 years of positive psychology research, professional experience in hundreds of workplaces, and interviews with extraordinary leaders across diverse sectors.

ALIGHT is an acronym for six fundamental leadership resources: Abundance, Limberness, Inspiration, Grand Design, Health, and Tribe. These six resources break down into 18 core components that leaders can develop to bring out the best in themselves and their teams, transforming performance to extraordinary levels. The model doesn't demand perfection—it offers a practical roadmap for leaders at all levels to grow and develop.

💬 Leadership Through Conversation: One Question at a Time

Here's the power of FlourishTalk for leadership development: transformative questions spark the conversations that build great leaders.

"What does having a strengths mindset mean to you as a leader?"

Imagine a leadership team exploring this question together. One person realizes they've been leading from a deficit perspective—always fixing problems, never building on what works. Another discovers they talk about strengths but don't actually deploy them strategically. A third recognizes they've been missing the strengths of quieter team members. One question, one hour, three leadership breakthroughs.

"How do you respond when plans change unexpectedly?"

A simple question about adaptability opens up a rich conversation: some leaders realize they create anxiety in their teams during change. Others discover they're more adaptable than they thought. The team develops shared strategies for navigating uncertainty together. One question reshapes how an entire team approaches change.

This is FlourishTalk's approach to leadership development: Not lectures or theories, but meaningful conversations that help leaders reflect, learn, and grow. Each question is an opportunity to examine practice, share wisdom, challenge assumptions, and commit to growth—whether in coaching sessions, team meetings, or personal reflection.

How FlourishTalk Develops Leadership Through Conversation

The ALIGHT framework comes alive through reflective questions that spark insight, dialogue, and growth:

Deepen Self-Awareness—One Question at a Time: "What triggers resistance to change in you?" This single question can reveal patterns a leader has never noticed. In coaching or peer conversation, exploring it uncovers assumptions, fears, and possibilities for growth.

Build Team Alignment Through Dialogue: "What is your core purpose as a leader?" When a leadership team explores this together, they discover shared values, clarify collective direction, and strengthen commitment to common goals.

Foster Developmental Conversations: "How do you help team members see their own potential and capabilities?" This question invites leaders to reflect on their strengths-spotting practices, share effective approaches, and commit to more intentional development.

Create Psychological Safety: Leaders discussing questions together normalize vulnerability, model reflection, and build the trust that enables teams to thrive.

Support Continuous Growth: Revisiting questions periodically helps leaders track development, celebrate progress, and identify new growth edges.
