Where It All Began: The BeWell Story

How a university wellness program with simple conversation cards saved thousands of students—and gave birth to FlourishTalk

A Founder's Reflection by Alten

In 2013, Stellenbosch University faced a crisis that universities worldwide still struggle with today: first-year students were dropping out at alarming rates. Not because they weren't smart enough. Because they were struggling with something no textbook could teach them—how to navigate life itself.

The traditional approach wasn't working. Academic support focused on study skills and tutoring, but research showed that student success depends on so much more: emotional wellbeing, physical health, social connection, sense of purpose, career clarity, and intellectual confidence. The question wasn't whether holistic support mattered. The question was: How do you operationalize it at scale?

The answer came in an unexpectedly simple form: six conversation cards.

Six Cards That Changed Everything

BeWell developed a set of six conversation cards based on Hettler's Wellness Model, addressing Physical Wellness (safety, nutrition, exercise, rest), Emotional Wellness (self-esteem, expressing emotions, managing stress), Intellectual Wellness (cognitive development, study strategies, growth mindset), Occupational Wellness (career preparation, finding purpose), Social Wellness (building relationships, community connection, belonging), and Spiritual Wellness (meaning, purpose, values, reflection).

"Rather than prescribing solutions, the cards used open-ended questions to facilitate student-led exploration. Each card honored three principles: Listen, Learn, and Choose—students retain agency over their decisions."

The innovation wasn't the categories—it was the approach. Mentors didn't need years of training in counseling psychology. They needed facilitation skills, empathy, and structured tools—exactly what the cards provided.

BeWell by the Numbers

4,000+ Students Reached
600 Trained Mentors
30,000+ Documented Sessions
41 Student Residences

The Results That Changed My Mind

I'll admit: when I first encountered the data, I was skeptical. Could a few cards with questions really move the needle on something as complex as student retention? The evidence was undeniable:

Measurable Impact on Retention

+7.78% Overall Retention Gain
+24.52% Xhosa-Speaking Students
+16.82% Weak Academic Prep
+15.25% Lowest Socioeconomic

But here's what stopped me in my tracks: the program showed the greatest impact for historically disadvantaged students—exactly the demographic most at risk. Xhosa-speaking students (often from under-resourced schools) gained nearly 25 percentage points in retention. The program closed equity gaps rather than widening them.

Student Voices

"I am not very happy about my physical wellness. I don't know when last I exercised. I don't eat a balanced diet as well. I want to improve my body. Exercise more, maybe start jogging again and eating healthier."

— First-year student reflecting on Physical Wellness card

"I would like to experience true and unburdened happiness because I don't think I have ever experienced that. There is always something that will hinder me from truly being happy."

— Student exploring Emotional Wellness

"Talent got me this far, but only skill can take me further. Skill is only developed through loads of practice and commitment, which requires self-discipline."

— Student gaining insight through Intellectual Wellness card

These weren't scripted responses. They were genuine moments of reflection sparked by simple, thoughtful questions. Mentors consistently reported that the cards gave them confidence to facilitate meaningful conversations without feeling they needed to "fix" students or have all the answers.

The Question That Launched FlourishTalk

Watching BeWell transform thousands of lives, I kept coming back to one question: Why should this be limited to university students?

The same principles that helped first-generation students navigate university could help couples strengthen their marriages. The same conversation structures that supported anxious freshmen could guide coaches in developing their clients. The same question frameworks that promoted student wellbeing could help teachers connect with struggling learners.

The FlourishTalk Vision

If six wellness cards could transform thousands of students, what could 23,000+ evidence-based questions across 37+ categories do for the world? FlourishTalk was born from a simple conviction: everyone deserves access to the tools that facilitate flourishing—not just those who can afford premium programs.

What BeWell Taught Me

Looking back, BeWell didn't just prove that conversation cards work. It taught me several principles that now guide everything we do at FlourishTalk:

Structure enables depth. The right questions, organized thoughtfully, create safety for vulnerable sharing. People don't need to be "fixed"—they need space to discover their own answers.

Peer facilitation works. You don't need a PhD to facilitate transformative conversations. You need good questions, genuine curiosity, and a willingness to listen.

Accessibility closes gaps. When tools are designed to be simple and scalable, they reach exactly the people who need them most.

Evidence matters. The most powerful testimonials come from rigorous data. BeWell didn't just feel like it worked—it could prove it.

An Invitation

The BeWell story isn't just our origin story—it's proof of what's possible when we give people the right tools for meaningful conversation. Every time someone uses FlourishTalk to have a deeper conversation with their partner, their child, their team, or themselves, they're building on a foundation that was tested with thousands of students in South Africa.
